You can’t avoid stress or stop your body’s reaction to it. But there’s still plenty you can do. Try these simple strategies to help nix tension for good!
Use Mantras: Stress can cause minor annoyances to build up. Stay calm and avoid losing your cool with a little self-talk. Affirmations can help you reframe uncool situations with gratitude 🙂
You’re stuck in line: “I am grateful for this moment to collect my thoughts”
The clerk is rude: “I forgive you, I release you”
You burned dinner: “I let go of expectations, It is what it is”
You didn’t get the promotion you wanted: “I am grateful for the gifts I have in life”
Sleep: Sounds crazy when you’re stressed out right? Sleep? What sleep? Well studies show that a person who gets less than six hours of sleep can have nearly 50% more cortisol at the end of the day than someone who gets 8 hours of sleep. We all know that cortisol makes you store fat and eat more. BAAAAD!! Sleep deprivation also increases the amount of ghrelin (the hormone that sparks your appetite) and leptin (decreases appetite suppressors)…Also BAAAAAD!! LOL How much time is the right amount? Anything around 7-8hrs is sufficient, less or more can cause weight gain. Get those Zzzzzzzzzzzzz’s!!
Do Something You Love:  For some people, meditation is the secret to serenity. One way that meditation works is by breaking the chain of everyday thoughts. You have to find what works for you. Anything that can distract your mind, in a positive way, from the must-do lists  will reduce your anxiety. Whether it be knitting, painting your nails, doing crosswords or Sudoku just to name a few.
Take A Time Out: When a touchy subject is brought up or a simply conversation turns south… keep calm and use these tactics to transition through like a champ!
If you need to end a conversation, simply say to the person that you need time to think about what they’re saying to you…then duck out discreetly. Give yourself at least 10 minutes to decompress. Go to the bathroom, take a walk or run, hell…go grocery shopping! Anything will work as long as you leave the situation and change your state!
If you can’t leave the scene, calm your nervous system by inhaling for a count of 5. Hold for a count of 5. And then exhale for a count of 5. Do this exercise 7 times. <——THIS REALLY WORKS!
Get Moving:  Any exercise is better than none when it comes to stress, not just Yoga. Instead of concentrating on doing “steady state” exercises..IE a cardio machine at a non challenging level for long periods of time…do intervals or HIIT (high intensity interval training). Hiit can improve the balance of hormones faster that steady state can. Try doing this in place of your workout next time: 30 seconds of sprinting to 1 minute of walking…you will burn more calories and spike your metabolism all while getting out your stress!  Then work your way up to 30/30 or 45/15! Challenge yourself!
Today may you be well! 😀
